Lyrics to "The Lament"

She gets ready for work in the morning

Drops her kids off at school for the day

When she finally gets home to exhaustion

Gathering strength as she watches them play

She wonders at the kids growing so fast

Hardly sees them

Barely knows them

She wonders how long this war will last

And when her man is coming home again

She feeds the kids and it's time for their good night

Shuts the door and then stops

At the stairs

Now alone in the light of the hallway

And blinking eyes suddenly filled with tears

She prays, "Please God,

I know I shouldn't feel this way

I'm not the one on the front lines

It's just a single mother's day to day

Just a casualty of wartime..."

She gets ready to write him a letter

Stumbling over the words she could say

Finding words to say how much they love him

Is easy

But she can't stop thinking of bills left unpaid...

"I know I shouldn't feel this way

I'm not the one on the front lines

It's just a single mother's day to day

Just a casualty of wartime..."

She wonders at the times in history

When wives and children

Have gone through this

She wonders how long this war will last

How many fathers

How many sons.....?
